Tracking: the pixel and the Conversions API

Tracking tells OpenAI which ads led to visits and sales. Two parts work together: OpenAI's pixel on your store sees visits and product views in the shopper's browser, and the app's server sends orders, checkouts and add-to-carts through the Conversions API, so sales still count when a browser blocks the pixel. You add two codes from Ads Manager and switch on one app embed. No code to paste.

With tracking on, OpenAI learns which ads sell and shows them to more shoppers like your buyers, and your profit numbers are right.

Set it up

  1. Add your Pixel ID. In Ads Manager, open Conversions. On the Data Source tab, the Pixel ID is the code under your pixel's name. Copy only the ID, not the script snippet. No pixel yet? Click Create, then Data Source, and it gets an ID right away.
  2. Switch on the pixel in your theme. Click Open theme editor (or Turn on in theme on the Tracking page). Under App embeds, switch on ChatGPT Ads pixel, then click Save. The pixel reads your Pixel ID from the app, so there's nothing to type there.
  3. Add your Conversions API key. In Ads Manager, open Conversions and click the key icon next to Create (or Settings → General → Manage conversion keys). Create a key and copy it right away: OpenAI shows it only once. Paste it in the app. The app sends a test event with it, then stores it encrypted.

You can skip the Conversions API key at first, but orders blocked by browsers won't be counted until you add it.

To change either code later, use Change keys on the Tracking page, or Settings → ChatGPT Ads. Keys are stored encrypted and never shown in full.

What's sent, and from where

Every online order goes to OpenAI a few minutes after it's placed. Test, POS and draft orders aren't sent. Add-to-carts and checkouts are sent only for shoppers OpenAI's pixel already knows, since they can't be matched to an ad otherwise.

Each event is counted once. Every event carries an ID (for an order, its Shopify order ID), so a retry, or the same order seen by the pixel, is counted once by OpenAI.

To help OpenAI match an order to the ChatGPT user who saw the ad, the order goes with the shopper's email, phone and name, hashed before they leave the app's server and never stored, plus the IP address and OpenAI's own browser and ad-click IDs when there are any. The Match data on orders card shows which of these went with your recent orders.

Consent

Tracking follows your store's cookie banner through Shopify's Customer Privacy API. Nothing is measured in the browser until a shopper allows both analytics and marketing. A shopper who declines either isn't tracked by the pixel, and their add-to-carts and checkouts aren't sent.

The Tracking page

Open Tracking to see:

  • Setup: five checks, each with a one-click fix: Pixel ID, Pixel on your store, Conversions API, Events reaching OpenAI (in the last 48 hours) and First order sent. If your store has a password, the pixel check turns green only once the store is open.
  • Send a test: sends a test event. "OpenAI accepted the test" means tracking works.
  • Events delivered in the last 30 days, how many didn't go through, and when the last one went.
  • Shoppers from your ads: ad visitors, product views, add-to-carts, checkouts, orders and sales from shoppers who clicked a ChatGPT ad, against the 30 days before.
  • Latest orders: each with its status (Sent to OpenAI, Sending in a few minutes, Didn't go through, or Not sent for test, POS or older orders) and whether it came From a ChatGPT ad.
  • Match data on orders and Connection (your Pixel ID and Conversions API key status).

Event limits

Server events (orders, add-to-carts and checkouts the app sends) count towards your plan each billing period:

PlanTracked events a period
Free10,000
Starter100,000
Growth1,000,000
ProUnlimited

Orders always go. Past the limit, add-to-carts and checkouts wait until the next period, and the Tracking page says so. Product views come from OpenAI's pixel and don't count. See plans and limits.

Avoid double counting

If a theme snippet or another app also adds OpenAI's pixel, visits may count twice. The Tracking page warns Another OpenAI pixel is on your store. Remove the other one and keep the app's ChatGPT Ads pixel embed.
