AI Chatbot vs Live Chat vs Helpdesk for Shopify: Which Does Your Store Need?
Search for Shopify support tools and three words get mixed together: chatbot, live chat and helpdesk. Many apps now sell all three in one box, so it is hard to tell what you are paying for.
They are different tools that solve different problems. This guide explains each one, what it costs, how many people it needs, and which mix fits your store's size, with Black Friday Cyber Monday (BFCM) four weeks away.
The short version
- Live chat is a chat window on your store where a person on your team answers in real time.
- An AI chatbot (or AI agent) is the same window, but software answers, any hour, using your products, policies and orders.
- A helpdesk is a shared inbox for your team. It pulls email, chat and social messages into tickets so nothing is lost and work can be assigned.
Put simply: live chat and AI chatbots decide who answers. A helpdesk decides how your team organises the work.
Live chat: fast and human, but only while someone is online
Live chat is the oldest of the three. Shopify's own free app, Shopify Inbox, is the default for most stores: a chat button on your storefront, answered from the desktop or mobile app.
Good at:
- Pre-sale questions that need judgment ("will this fit a 3-year-old?")
- Calming an upset customer
- Building trust for a small brand
Bad at:
- Nights, weekends and other time zones. When nobody is online, live chat turns into a contact form.
- Scale. One person can only hold a few chats at once.
- Repeat questions. Your team types "where is my order" answers all day.
Cost: the software is often cheap or free. The real cost is staff hours. Shoppers expect chat to be quick: Gorgias's own benchmark guide sets "under one minute" as the target first reply for live chat, against "under 24 hours" for email (Gorgias). Treat that as a vendor target, not an independent study, but it matches what a chat window promises.
AI chatbot: always on, best at repeat questions
An AI chatbot answers in the same chat window without a person. The useful ones are connected to your store data, not just a pasted FAQ. We covered the step from chatbot to agent (one that can actually take actions) in what is a Shopify AI agent.
Good at:
- Order status, shipping times, returns policy, sizing, stock questions
- Answering at 2am and on Black Friday morning at the same speed
- Covering many conversations at once
Bad at:
- Judgment calls: refunds on worn items, damaged parcels, angry customers
- Anything it was not trained on. A weak setup gives confident wrong answers.
- Knowing its limits, unless it is built to hand off
Cost: pricing models vary a lot: per conversation, per AI reply, per "resolution", or a flat monthly fee. Shopify Inbox's newer Inbox agent can reply automatically for free, using your catalog, policies and pages (Shopify Help Center). Paid apps range from about $15 to several hundred dollars a month. Our 2026 roundup of Shopify AI chatbot apps has the full price table.
Helpdesk: the system that keeps a team organised
A helpdesk (Gorgias, Zendesk, Re:amaze, Richpanel) is a ticketing system. Every email, chat, Instagram DM and contact form becomes a ticket with a status, an owner and a history. Shopify helpdesks also show the customer's orders next to the ticket.
Good at:
- Email, which is still where returns, exchanges and complaints land
- Several people sharing one queue without double replies
- Reports: response times, ticket volume, who handled what
- Macros (saved replies) and rules for routing
Bad at:
- Small stores. If one person answers everything, a helpdesk is mostly overhead.
- Price at scale. Most charge per seat, per ticket, or both, and AI is often a separate meter.
- Speed of setup. Expect days of configuring rules and macros.
What each one really costs
Prices below come from each vendor's own pricing page or Shopify listing. Check before you buy.
| Tool | Type | Entry price | How the bill grows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Inbox | Live chat + free AI agent | Free | No fee (verified 2026-09-12) |
| Tidio | Live chat + AI | $29/mo live chat, $39/mo Lyro AI | Separate line items per product (verified 2026-09-11) |
| Gorgias | Helpdesk + AI | $10/mo for 50 tickets | Ticket overage plus $1.00 per AI resolution (verified 2026-09-11) |
| Re:amaze | Helpdesk + chat | $29/seat/mo, or $59/mo flat for 500 conversations | Seats, plus $0.85 per AI resolution past the included amount (verified 2026-09-12) |
| Zendesk | Helpdesk | $55/agent/mo billed annually ($69 monthly) | Seats, plus $2.00 per pay-as-you-go AI resolution (per zendesk.com/pricing, 2026-11-01) |
The pattern: live chat is cheap software that needs paid people. Helpdesks charge for seats and tickets. AI is increasingly billed per resolution, so a busy month costs more just when you are busiest.
Staffing: the cost nobody puts on the pricing page
- Live chat only: someone must be online for every hour the chat shows "online". Covering 12 hours a day, 7 days a week is roughly two people's worth of shifts.
- Helpdesk only: no one has to be online at that moment, but replies are slower. Gorgias reports that brands automating close to zero percent of tickets average 736-minute (over 12-hour) first response times, against 12 minutes at around 40% automation (Gorgias benchmarks). That is Gorgias's own platform data, so read it as directional.
- AI chatbot first: the AI takes the repeat questions, so your team works a smaller, harder queue during normal hours.
How the three fit together
Most growing stores end up with a mix. The order that works:
- AI chatbot answers first on the storefront and messaging channels: order status, policies, product questions.
- Human handoff when the AI cannot answer, the customer asks for a person, or the topic needs judgment. A good handoff passes the full transcript so the customer does not repeat themselves.
- Helpdesk or shared inbox holds email, returns and anything that takes more than one reply.
- Live chat stays as an option during staffed hours for high-value pre-sale questions.
Which setup fits your store
| Store stage | Monthly tickets (rough) | Recommended setup |
|---|---|---|
| New store, founder answers | Under 100 | Shopify Inbox, or a free AI chatbot plan. No helpdesk. |
| Growing, 1 support person | 100 to 500 | AI chatbot first, with handoff to email. Helpdesk optional. |
| Small team, 2 to 5 people | 500 to 2,000 | AI chatbot plus a helpdesk for email and returns. Live chat in staffed hours. |
| Larger team or multi-brand | 2,000+ | Full helpdesk with AI automation, routing rules and reporting. |
Ticket bands are our rule of thumb, not an industry standard. The real trigger for a helpdesk is more than one person replying to email, not a number.
The BFCM test
Black Friday is November 27 this year. Peak season breaks whichever piece is weakest:
- Live chat only: the queue overflows within hours and chats go unanswered overnight.
- Helpdesk only: tickets pile up and "where is my order" emails arrive twice from the same customer.
- AI only, no handoff: the hard 10% of conversations (damaged items, wrong orders) get stuck with no human route.
The fix is the combined setup above, tested before the sale. Our BFCM customer support checklist has a week-by-week plan, and how to test an AI chatbot before Black Friday covers the testing.
Where Vosaire fits
Vosaire is an AI chatbot and AI agent, not a full helpdesk. If you have a team of five working email tickets all day, you likely still want Gorgias, Zendesk or Re:amaze. Where Vosaire fits is the "AI answers first" layer, for stores that want to delay or shrink a helpdesk:
- Order status tracking on every plan, including Free, with identity checks before sensitive lookups on Growth and up.
- Escalation to your team with the full transcript, shown in an Escalated view in the inbox (conversation statuses).
- One inbox across channels: the storefront widget plus WhatsApp and Telegram on every plan, and a Gmail inbox from Growth ($49.99/mo). Gmail is invite-only while Google's review is in progress.
- Cancellation and return intake on Growth and up, which records the request for your team to decide instead of guessing.
- Flat pricing: Starter is $15.99/mo for 1,000 AI replies, no per-resolution fee.

FAQ
Do I need a helpdesk for my Shopify store? Not at first. If one or two people handle support and most questions are repeats, an AI chatbot with handoff to email is usually enough. Add a helpdesk once several people reply to email and you need assignment and reporting.
Is a Shopify chatbot better than live chat? For repeat questions and out-of-hours coverage, yes. For judgment calls and upset customers, a person is better. Most stores use AI first and keep a human route.
Gorgias vs Tidio vs Shopify Inbox: what is the difference? Shopify Inbox is free live chat with a basic AI agent. Tidio is live chat plus a paid AI add-on. Gorgias is a full helpdesk with AI billed per resolution. They sit at different steps of the table above.
Can an AI chatbot replace my support team? No. It can take the repeat volume, so your team spends its time on the conversations that need a person.
